Scotland Commercial Photographer - The Simplest Ways to Make the Best of Self-portraits

Self-portraits. I thought it would be easier for me to write haha but writing about taking self-portraits is for me like taking them. It seems to be easy, you put the camera on a tripod, take a picture and it’s ready, but it is not. At the beginning there is a fight with yourself, you take your first steps shyly, try different positions, settings…

However, there is some magic in taking self-portraits. Moreover, for most of us, this is a kind of therapy. For me as well. What’s more, you can practice your creativity, try new camera settings, i.e. do everything you can’t afford during a normal photo session. And then have fun editing the photos you took.

And above all, remember to have fun!

  1. Indoor or outdoor – start from your home, a place where you will feel more at ease. In addition, it will be easier for you to change clothes, props if you decide that something does not suit you. Look for interesting light, composition, angles.
  2. Equipment – I use my camera, a 13-year-old tripod, remote control or an application on the phone (Canon Camera Control for Canon & iPhone – it’s not perfect and takes time to connect the camera to the phone but for now this is the only one which I found). If you do not have a tripod, put the camera on a shelf, chair, make a pile of books (just make sure that the camera does not fall down). I usually use a 2-second delay in order to have time to leave the remote control or the phone. Sometimes I change settings for 10 seconds.
  3. Light – I love natural light. That’s why I usually stand or sit by the window when I take self-portraits indoor. But try everything, use your imagination and do whatever you only want to. You might use candles, torches, Christmas tree lights, fairy lights. This is the best – you might be as much creative as you only want to.
  4. Taking self-portraits outdoor – I usually do them in the morning because there is nobody in the park or on the paths where I go. And to be honest I feel more comfortable. Morning and evening hours are the best because of the beautiful light.
  5. Props – you can take simple photos without using any props. You can also use anything (well, almost haha) that comes under your hands. Have fun, try, change.
  6. Editing – taking self-portraits (especially at the beginning of your adventure with photography) is a great way to practice photo processing and create your unique style. You don’t have to worry that the client or model will not be satisfied with the final result. Use your imagination (remember about moderation, because sometimes too much is unhealthy. Two years of taking selfies every week let me find my way of editing photos, which does not mean that I will learn nothing more. There will always be something I could discover).
