Having photographed weddings in Tuscany, I’ve learned that every season offers something completely different. Choosing the right one isn’t about chasing perfect weather, because, just like anywhere else in Europe, Tuscany can always surprise you. Instead, it’s about deciding what kind of atmosphere you want your wedding to have.

If I had to choose just one month purely from a photographer’s perspective, I’d probably say September.

The summer heat begins to soften, vineyards are full, the light becomes warmer and more golden, and evenings remain comfortable enough for long outdoor dinners.

That said, it doesn’t mean September is automatically the best choice for every couple.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Tuscany is that it’s always hot and sunny. While it certainly enjoys a wonderful climate, the weather still changes from season to season, and it’s worth understanding those differences before choosing your date.

Spring usually brings mild temperatures, fresh greenery and occasional showers. Summer offers long sunny days, although July and August can become extremely hot, particularly during heatwaves. Autumn combines warm afternoons with cooler evenings and some of the most beautiful colours you’ll see all year. Winter is much quieter, cooler and surprisingly romantic, especially if you’re planning a smaller celebration inside one of Tuscany’s historic villas or castles.

Rather than asking, “Will it rain?”, I’d encourage couples to ask themselves a different question: “How do we want our wedding to feel?” That answer usually makes choosing the season much easier.

Spring is often overlooked, but it’s one of my favourite times to photograph weddings in Italy. After the quieter winter months, the countryside slowly comes back to life. Unlike the harsher midday sun you’ll often experience during summer, spring offers gentler light throughout much of the day, making it beautiful for photography. Temperatures are usually comfortable too, allowing guests to enjoy being outdoors without the intense heat that can arrive later in the year.

For couples planning a garden ceremony or cocktails outside, spring creates a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Why choose a spring wedding in Tuscany?

Spring is ideal if you’re looking for:

• fewer tourists than during peak summer
• softer light for photographs
• slightly more availability at some venues

Many couples also appreciate that accommodation can be a little easier to secure for guests before the busiest holiday season begins.

Things to keep in mind

Spring weather can still be unpredictable. It’s not unusual to experience sunshine one moment and a brief shower the next. Rather than seeing this as a disadvantage, I’d simply recommend choosing a venue with a beautiful indoor option.

Some of the most elegant Tuscan villas have incredible reception rooms, glasshouses or covered terraces that allow the celebration to continue seamlessly if the weather changes. And honestly? Some of my favourite wedding photographs have been taken immediately after a spring shower, when everything feels fresh and the light becomes beautifully soft.

Summer weddings in Tuscany (June to August)

When most people imagine getting married in Tuscany, they’re usually picturing summer: golden fields, cypress-lined roads, dinner beneath fairy lights, warm evenings that seem to last forever. And yes, it really can be every bit as beautiful as it sounds.

June is particularly popular because temperatures are generally warm without being overwhelming, and daylight stretches late into the evening. It’s the perfect season for outdoor ceremonies followed by long al fresco dinners where nobody wants the night to end.

July and August, however, are a slightly different story. While they’re incredibly popular months, they’re also the hottest. Temperatures above 35°C are no longer unusual, and recent summers have brought several heatwaves across much of Italy.

That doesn’t mean you should avoid a summer wedding altogether. It simply means your timeline needs to work with the climate rather than against it.

Planning a summer wedding during a heatwave

If you’re getting married in Tuscany during July or August, it’s worth assuming that it could be very hot.

Rather than hoping for cooler temperatures, I’d recommend embracing the season and planning your day around it. Your guests (and you!) will be far more comfortable, and your photographs will benefit too.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is scheduling an outdoor ceremony at 2 or 3 pm. By then, the sun is usually at its highest, there’s very little shade, and everyone is trying their best not to squint. It’s uncomfortable for your guests, difficult for elderly family members and young children, and the harsh midday light isn’t particularly flattering in photographs either.

Instead, I’d always suggest moving your ceremony later in the day if your venue allows it. A ceremony around 5–6 pm makes a huge difference. The temperature begins to drop, the light becomes softer, and everyone enjoys the experience much more. It also creates a lovely natural flow into cocktail hour, dinner and sunset portraits.

Little things your guests will appreciate

Heatwaves don’t have to define your wedding, but thoughtful planning goes a long way.

Some ideas I always love seeing include:

• a self-service water station available before guests arrive for the ceremony
• chilled lemonade or iced tea on arrival
• handheld fans placed on ceremony chairs
• baskets of sunglasses if you’re planning a relaxed celebration
• shaded seating where possible
• a slower timeline that gives people time to cool down between different parts of the day

These details may seem small, but they’ll make your guests feel genuinely looked after.

Umbrellas… but choose them carefully

Umbrellas can be a brilliant idea for outdoor ceremonies. One small tip, though, is to choose white, ivory or neutral-coloured umbrellas rather than bright colours. Colourful umbrellas might look fun, but they also reflect those colours back onto people’s faces, creating red, blue or green colour casts that are very difficult to remove naturally in photographs. Neutral umbrellas provide shade without affecting skin tones and they blend beautifully into the overall styling of the day.

Save your portraits for golden hour

Another reason I love later ceremonies is what happens afterwards. Instead of disappearing for portraits during the hottest part of the afternoon, couples can spend cocktail hour with their guests and then slip away for ten or fifteen minutes just before sunset.

Golden hour in Tuscany is something special: the hills soften, the light turns warm and golden, long shadows stretch across vineyards and olive groves. You don’t need hours away from your wedding. Just a few quiet moments together while everyone else enjoys another glass of wine. Those are often the photographs couples frame first.

Autumn weddings in Tuscany (September to November)

If someone asked me when I’d choose to get married in Tuscany myself, I’d probably answer September or early October.

Everything simply feels… balanced. The intense summer heat begins to fade, but it’s still warm enough for outdoor ceremonies and dinners beneath the stars. The vineyards become full and rich with colour. Olive trees are heavy with fruit. Markets overflow with seasonal produce. The whole region feels wonderfully alive. It’s also harvest season.

Wine has always been part of Tuscan culture, and during autumn you can feel that energy everywhere. Vineyards become busy, local festivals begin to appear, and menus start celebrating seasonal ingredients.

For couples who love food, wine and long dinners, it’s an incredible time to visit.

Why choose an autumn wedding?

Autumn combines many of the best parts of spring and summer. You still enjoy comfortable temperatures, but without the extremes of July and August. The evenings remain pleasant enough for outdoor celebrations, while daytime temperatures are generally much easier for everyone.

From a photography perspective, autumn light is one of my favourites. It has a softness that’s difficult to describe until you see it. The colours become warmer. Sunsets feel richer. Even cloudy days seem to have a certain depth to them.

Things to keep in mind

As autumn progresses into late October and November, the chance of rain naturally increases. That shouldn’t put you off.

Italian villas are incredibly good at adapting to changing weather, and some of the most elegant receptions I’ve photographed have happened indoors: candles, historic stone walls, beautiful architecture.

Sometimes Plan B turns out to be exactly where the celebration was meant to happen.

Winter weddings in Tuscany (December to February)

Winter is perhaps Tuscany’s best-kept secret. While it may not suit couples dreaming of outdoor dinners, it creates a completely different atmosphere. The countryside becomes quieter. Tourists disappear. Historic villas feel wonderfully intimate. Fireplaces are lit. Candles become part of the styling almost without trying.

Rather than planning around gardens and vineyards, winter weddings celebrate architecture, food and time spent together.

If you’re planning a smaller wedding with your closest family and friends, it’s a season well worth considering. Many venues also offer greater availability, making it easier to secure your preferred date.

One of the wonderful things about getting married in Tuscany is that the culture naturally encourages this. Dinner isn’t rushed. Guests stay at the table for hours. People talk. Laugh. Dance. Pour another glass of wine. Nobody seems to be looking at the clock.

My biggest advice is not to fight that rhythm. Don’t try to recreate a wedding from home in Tuscany. Let Tuscany be Tuscany.

Embrace the long dinners, local food, incredible wine, slower pace of the day and the warmth of Italian hospitality. Those are the moments your guests will remember years from now.

And one more thing… Make time for just the two of you. Not for an hour-long photoshoot, but for ten or fifteen quiet minutes together. Walk through the vineyards. Take in the view. Hold hands. Breathe.
